Master and PhD-Project

Isotopic evidence of foraging ecology of Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) and woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) in China during the Late Pleistocene.

Elephas maximus and Mammuthus primigenius are two significant Elephantidae in the Late Pleistocene, which are respectively the characteristic mammal in south and northeast of China. After the nearly simultaneous flourish in Late Pleistocene, Mammuthus primigenius becomes extinct, while Elephas maximus survives as one of the only three extant elephant species.

During my master and PhD period, I mainly focus on applying carbon, nitrogen and oxygen stable isotope analysis on the fossilized Elephantidae remains and their symbiotic animals. My research sites are including Baxian Cave and Quzai Cave (Elephas fauna) in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China, and Mammuthus- Coelodonta fauna from Daqing museum and Yanjiagang site in northeastern china. Through my systematically researches on Elephas maximus and Mammuthus primigenius, the foraging strategy of two Elephantidae will be reconstructed, which might imply the mainspring of their different fate at the end of Late Pleistocene.
