New Emmy Noether Group researching ice-ocean interactions
Reinhard Drews, currently working with Prof. Todd Ehlers in the Geoscience Department, has been awarded a five year Emmy Noether Grant for the built up of a young investigators group.
The research focus will be on the interactions between the Antarctic Ice Sheet and its surrounding oceans. Currently observed ice loss in Antarctica is likely caused by ocean-induced melting beneath the floating ice shelves surrounding the Antarctic perimeter. However, it is unclear which mechanisms controll basal melting, what the spatial and temporal variability has been in the past, and what it will be in the future. This is one of the largest uncertainties hampering our capacity to predict sea level rise in the 21st century and beyond. The new Emmy Noether Group will tackle this problem with an interdisciplinary approach of geophysical measurements, numerical modelling and robotics further strengthening the already existing expertise in geophysics and glaciology within the Department.
