Abstract

The research training group investigates the underlying reasons for the persistence of a predominantly binary concept of gender – contrary to substantial evidence of non-binary and open models of gender, sexuality and relationships in theory and practice. Combining a broad variety of perspectives and methods from ethics and theology, literary and cultural studies and sociology, the individual projects aim to explore which discourses and practices help to stabilise gender binaries. Considering a wide range of case studies, they also discuss the conditions and contexts under which a partial suspension of the postulate of an undisputable gender binarism becomes possible.
