Ecology and mechanisms of FeOx

Our research on ecology and mechanisms of microbial iron(II) oxidation focuses on abundance, distribution, activity and mechanisms of phototrophic, nitrate-reducing and microaerophilic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria. We use a combination of cultivation-based, physiological and molecular approaches as well as (electron) microscopy to study pure cultures, enrichments and environmental samples. We study microbial iron oxidation in subsurface habitats, soils, on wetland plant roots, marine and freshwater sediments and iron-rich springs.
