Wetland biogeochemistry

We study the cycling of several elements such as iron, carbon, nitrogen, and arsenic in wetland ecosystems. These systems often undergo oxic-anoxic transitions, resulting in several coupled redox reactions. In rice paddy soils, we study microbial Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) reduction that may control the release of N2O and arsenic. In a new project, we are investigating carbon release coupled to iron and sulfur cycling in coastal wetlands located on the northern coast of Germany (Wadden Sea).
