Looking back: Previous International Education Weeks

2019

The International Education Week was offered by the Tübingen School of Education (TüSe) again in 2019. Fifty-five participants from more than ten different countries attended and together they discussed current topics in teacher education, about the school systems in their home countries, didactical and education theoretical positions and ethical arguments to questions of sustainability.

The following subjects were offered Ethics and Sustainable Development with Dr. Uta Müller and Dr. Simon Meisch, Teaching English with Prof. Uwe Küchler and Education Sciences with PD Dr. Dr. Martin Harant. As it was in the previous year, the courses were complemented by various lectures from guest scientists from France, England and Ireland.

The TüSE would like to thank all those who made this week possible through their engagement and work.

2018

The Program

Participants of the International Education Week had the opportunity to personally experience developments in pedagogical content knowledge and educational science within the field of teacher education in Tübingen.
Students selected the following three courses: Teaching Biology (Prof. Dr. Christoph Randler), Teaching English as a Foreign Language (Prof. Dr. Uwe Küchler), and Educational Science (PD Dr. Dr. Martin Harant). Lectures held by guest speakers from Slovenia, England, and Tübingen supplemented the course material.

The time spent together served as an opportunity for a lively exchange about different European educational and teacher education systems, allowing differences and similarities to be extensively discussed.

The lecture from Dr. Iztok Tomazic, from the University of Ljubljana, introduced various approaches for working with living animals in biology. Dr. Amos Paran, the first Ottilie-Wildermuth Chair for English as a Foreign Language (Institution of Education, UCL London) discussed the integration of critical thought into the classroom and presented analysis of various textbook exercises. Dr. Randler's lecture about the implications of chronobiology fir schooling and education, as well as Dr. Uta Müller's presentation from the International Center for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities (IZEW) presented the participants of the International Education Week with inter-disciplinary glimpses into the various research and employement fields at the University of Tübingen.

Cultural Program

During the guided tour, followed by a ride on the historical wooden boats (Stocherkähne), the participants learned many anecdotes from Tübingen's storied cultural and scientific history. At the program-wide dinner at the Neckarmüller, they were also able to taste German cuisine for themselves. Visits to the 'Haus der Geschichte' ('House of History') and the 'Mercedes-Benz-Museum' provided many topics of conversation. Finally, while several students visited Stuttgart's zoo, others spent the day's final hours in one of Stuttgart's homely beer gardens.

"At - Home" Internationalization

Tübingen's students and teachers alike benefitted from international exposure, interesting conversations, and lively debates in the wide variety of seeminars offered by the progran.

It was determined that the week went by far too quickly and the International Education Week's team looks forward to offer the program again in 2019.
