Bioengineers identify essential genes of microbial life.

New study defines minimal genetic composition and functions of bacterial cells.

In collaboration with the University of California at San Diego, a new study was published in the journal PNAS in which the minimal amount of genes and functions needed for a bacterial cell to survive was compiled for the first time.

These results could pave the way for much more effective genetic modification by preventing the cultivation of pathogenic microbes. Further applications are in medicine and food production.
