Dr. Daniel Schuhmann Foundation

The Dr. Daniel Schuhmann Foundation was established in 2018 by Dipl.-Ing. Hugo Schuhmann and Prof. Dr. Peter-Andrew Schwarz of the University of Basel. It was founded in memory of the archaeologist Dr. Daniel Schuhmann, who passed away in 2016.

Throughout his whole student and professional career, Dr. Daniel Schuhmann (1982–2016) worked at the interface of archaeology and computer science. He completed his studies at the University of Basel in 2007 with his diploma thesis on findings in Hummal, Syria. During his undergraduate studies he repeatedly participated in excavations in El Kowm, Syria. This site provided the data for his doctoral project ("ElKowmGIS: Ein neues System zur Dokumentation archäologischer Fundstellen"). The dissertation, completed in 2013, was supervised by Prof. Dr. Jean-Marie Le Tensorer from the University of Basel and Prof. Dr. Nicholas J. Conard from the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. Dr. Schuhmann was then (as of 2012) employed as an associate researcher and lecturer at the Vindonissa Professorship of Prof. Dr. Schwarz. Most recently, he worked in data management and data processing at the archives of the Department of Archaeology & Research, Augusta Raurica.

The foundation supports students and PhD students of pre- and early history, provincial Roman archaeology, archaeological sciences, classical archaeology and modern history. It also subsidises excursions within these fields.

In 2019, the Foundation first awarded scholarships, to master students of the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology at the University of Tübingen. The three awards awarded in 2019 supported the candidates in the preparation of their master's theses. The money was mainly used for research trips. The awardees were very thankful for the Dr. Daniel Schuhmann Foundation for its support.
