Mario Mata-González

Mario Mata-González is a master student in the Department of Archaeological Sciences at the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen. Previously, he completed his bachelor's degree in history with a focus on archaeology at the University of Granada (Spain). His studies included one semester abroad at the University of Ioannina (Greece) and an internship at the University of Perugia (Italy). He also gained experience as an archaeologist on several sites in Europe and Africa, such as Spain, Italy, Poland, Angola and South Africa. In his master thesis Mario Mata-González analyses the faunistic remains of the Ghar-e Boof, a Palaeolithic archaeological site in Iran. This site was discovered in 2004 and excavated between 2006 and 2017 by the “Tübingen Iranian Stone Age Research Project (TISARP) team”. Ghar-e Boof, is one of the most promising sites in Southwest Asia for understanding cultural and demographic changes during the transition from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic. The analysis of the faunistic remains will not only provide an insight into the past environment, but also new information about food and human hunting behaviour during the Late Pleistocene in the Zāgros mountains. The results have the potential to shed new light on the dispersal of modern humans to Southwest Asia.
