Excellence Strategy

Excellence Strategy

Goals & Measures

The University will continue to be one of Germany’s excellent research locations in the future. Its Research – Relevance – Responsibility concept, which enabled the University to achieve excellence status in the Excellence Initiative back in 2012, has been expanded and now includes Open to New Challenges and a Global Scope of Action. This underlines the University's aim of continuing on the path it has taken while also pursuing new strategic goals in an international research context. Our culture of cooperation and commitment guiding principles continue to form the basis of cooperation within the University and with our non-university partners at the Tübingen Research Campus and around the world – and are intended to ensure that Tübingen can maintain its position as an outstanding research location with an international profile in the long term.

FIVE GOALS

The University has set itself five main goals for the upcoming funding period of the Excellence Strategy:

1. Cultivate research excellence

spread the spirit of excellence throughout the university, use the strengths of our top research areas to attract world-renowned scientists and scholars, and raise our international reputation.

2. Advance Tübingen´s collaborative research environment

create first-rate infrastructure and form close-knit networks both to increase the competitiveness of our research areas and to recruit and retain top international performers.

3. Promote "ChangeAbility"

keep the University responsive, flexible and able to take up new research paradigms and developments in technology and society.

4. Enhance global awareness in research, training, and education

enable researchers and students to become responsible global citizens with competence across cultures.

5. Engage more fully with society

make relevant constributions to current debates and embrace new forms of science communication, outreach, and knowledge transfer.

CENTRAL MEASURES

In order to implement its strategic goals, the University will take measures to continue and expand existing structures as well as to establish new ones:

Platforms

After five years of successful work, the four established Platforms will be realigned.

Core Facilities

The three existing Core Facilities Quantitative Biology Center (QBiC), Center for Light-Matter Interaction, Sensors and Analytics (LISA+) and Digital Humanities Center (formerly eScience Center) will be supplemented by two new core facilities: Tübingen Structural Microscopy (TSM) and the Center for Methods in Empirical Research.

College of Fellows

The University established a College of Fellows for international academics, promoting innovative teaching and research. The college is aimed at postdoctoral students and professors and is intended to complement existing interdisciplinary programs.

Global Awareness Education Program

The University extends its interdisciplinary curriculum for employees and students with courses for acquiring intercultural competence. The Oecologicum program will also be expanded to take into account the environmental and social challenges of climate change. That way, we seek to meet the requirements of an increasingly globalized world.
