Recommendations on the Development of Gender Studies in Germany

For the first time, the German Science and Humanities Council (Deutscher Wissenschaftsrat) has conducted an exploratory survey of the state of gender research in Germany and issued recommendations for its further development (Wissenschaftsrat 2023). In its report, it advocates, among other things, a stronger integration of gender perspectives in research and teaching, an intensification of cooperation across disciplines, methods and institutions as well as sustainable institutional structures. Gender perspectives are currently still marginalized in the natural sciences, engineering and technology as well as in computer science. The Council of Science and Humanities sees great potential for development in non-university research, including departmental research.

At the University of Tübingen, the Center for Gender and Diversity Research (ZGD) contributes to the networking of different specialist perspectives on gender and diversity and initiates collaborations. It also places particular emphasis on critical research into diversity categories in the life sciences, natural sciences, engineering and technology. To better anchor gender research perspectives in teaching, the ZGD is organizing the "Gender and Diversity" certificate in cooperation with the Department of Interdisciplinary Education and Career Orientation (TRACS) from the winter semester 2024/2025.
