Application and admission to the bachelor’s program

The bachelor’s program in Japanese Studies has limited admissions in both the major and minor and can only commence in the winter semester. Applications must be submitted in the application and enrollment portal ALMA.

There is neither a fixed limit to the number of students who may enroll in a given year (Numerus Clausus or NC) nor an entrance exam. Based on evaluations of secondary school grades (Abitur or equivalent), approximately 25 students are accepted each year for the major and approximately 25 for the minor. Important factors in the evaluation are previous knowledge, experience in Japan, language abilities, and volunteer work or work in social services or social initiatives. These will positively influence evaluations of secondary school grades.

The application deadline is July 15 every year. The admission rate is usually high. Because of the demanding requirements of the program, students should seek advising from within the department before applying.

Advising for the bachelor’s program in Japanese Studies

Dr. Eva-Maria Meyer advises students about topics concerning the bachelor’s program, evaluations of study duration and achievements, financial aid (BAFöG), other certifications, and exam registration for all programs in Japanese Studies. Her office hours are Tuesdays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm or with an appointment.

Application and admission to the master’s program

Study in the master’s program in Japanese Studies and Politics and Society can only commence in the winter semester. Applications are due each year on September 30 through the central application and enrollment portal ALMA. The university’s directory of Degree Programs provided by Student Administration provides information about the entry requirements for the program.
