Instead, while staying rigorously close to her sources, Owen shows that the past was inhabited by diverse kinds of people, who responded to specific settings and problems in manifold ways. In these contexts women were at times hunters, fishers, craftspeople, collectors, shamans, killers, educators, sisters, mothers and grandmothers. In 1999 fifty leading scholars of early prehistory gathered in Tübingen for the second international conference on Middle Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age Settlement Systems. They presented results from recent excavations and developed new hypotheses and theoretical models for the settlement dynamics of this period spanning the several hundred thousand years during which anatomically and culturally modern people evolved. This volume includes 27 of the papers delivered at the Tübingen conference and summarizes the state of our knowledge about the settlement dynamics of this period.

This volume presents 22 papers on current research into the settlement dynamics of the Middle Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age. Many of these papers were presented at the third meeting of Commission 27 of the UISPP in Liège, Belgium in September, 2001. The research presented here draws on diverse sources of data about subsistence, technology, taphonomy, climatology, paleogeography, geoarchaeology and biological anthropology to build and test models for Middle Paleolithic and MSA settlement systems. This volume contains contributions by 37 international scholars that reflect multiple scales of analysis ranging from intra-site to regionally-oriented research. Diverse points of view highlight both unifying and contrasting elements in settlement dynamics during this period in which anatomically modern people emerged and important cultural advances were made across the Old World.
