Tübingen School of Education (TüSE)

Portfolio

Brief Description

Since the changeover to the Bachelor-Master system, the portfolio has, by ministerial specification, become a constitutive component of all teacher education degrees in Baden-Württemberg. The goals of portfolio work include strengthening students’ reflectivity and relating theory to practice in teacher education. The Tübingen Portfolio Work is interwoven with the curriculum in the educational science program. It explicitly does not serve as a performance review. As a starting point for expanding and differentiating the portfolios, which will be electronic and server-based in the future, a needs analysis is currently being conducted to determine which functions are required by those involved. The goal is to implement a portfolio which corresponds to the needs and interests of as many subjects as possible. As needed, the portfolio office advises and informs individual departments in the implementation and further development of the portfolio, and provides administrative and technical support for prospective projects.

Research Design

As part of the accompanying research on the portfolio, a systematic review was conducted to analyze the potentials attributed to portfolio work within the discourse. The goal is to analyze to what extent the formulated potentials are realized from an empirical perspective, where portfolio work falls short of its own standards, and in which areas research desiderata can be found. Linked back to the state of research, the potentials and limitations of portfolio work in teacher education can be systematically identified. The implementation of the Tübingen Portfolio is accompanied by a student survey
