Through an associated Emmy-Noether research group (Dr. Sara Kleindienst) we study oil degradation from both overlooked small-scale pollution events (e.g. discharges from ships, rivers, and run off) as well as from large pollution events (e.g. Deepwater Horizon accident). A combination of cultivation-based studies and molecular approaches is used to quantify degradation rates, to determine the impact of widely used dispersants, and to identify the key microbial players involved.
