Ethics and Sustainable Development

Education for Sustainable Development: The Role of Ethical Argumentation

We are confronted by ethical reasoning in all sorts of concrete societal discourses, such as the debate concerning sustainable development. As Education for Sustainable Development is a compulsory part of basic education in Germany, it is our aim to equip future teachers with core knowledge and professional abilities for their future work. Ethical arguments consistute the basis of evaluating actions and assigning responsibility. They can help answer the question of what we should do in order to ensure that as many people as possible can lead good and autonomous lives – today and in the future. For this reason, it is important to be able to recognize ethical reasoning and respond to it. In this introductory seminar course (Proseminar), we will discuss the main theoretical approaches to ethics, such as philosophy of happiness, deontological ethics, utilitarian ethics, and  moral relativism. In selected sessions, the various theoretical approaches will be applied to concrete current examples from the discourse surrounding sustainable development. The goal of the seminar is to provide an overview over the various approaches to ethics, to become familiar with ethics terms and types of ethical reasoning. In the last part of the course we will focus on educational settings: We will analyse, create and discuss teaching material on sustainable development under special consideration of their implicit and explicit ethical argumentation, and learn to develop and evaluate concrete ethical issues in educational settings.

Intercultural Encounters: Literature and Time Travel (TEFL II)

Cultural influences pervade all spheres of society and the potential for intercultural contact and exchange due to travel, commerce, media products, and social networks. This development raises as many theoretical and methodological questions as it creates opportunities for stimulating communication. A closer consideration of intercultural literacy in the field of Foreign Language Education has become paramount. The course provides theoretical background to the study of cultures and intercultural interaction by exploring the concept of culture and the ‘multicultural/intercultural’ / ’transcultural’. We will do this by exploring the cultures in the classroom and by taking a close look at literary text (preferably with the topic of 'time travel'). The course centers on the concept of literacy by discussing its tenets and also recent semantic extensions, such as intercultural literacy (but also Print, Visual, or Media Literacies). In the seminar, we will work for models of intercultural learning and scrutinize cultural incidents from literature, film or the everyday to explore cultural encoding processes, their functions and impact. A permanent and particular consideration is the learning and teaching of foreign languages and cultures. In relation to the theoretical concepts or model pertinent teaching approaches shall be explored.

In this course we will work on different philosophical mindsets of educational theory and on societal challenges for educational processes in school. A key issue will be the discussion of pedagogical teaching goals in pluralistic societies. Classes take place in the mornings and afternoons. The Education Week also includes expert talks, trips and social activities.
