From winter term 2014/2015 on, we offer a new track of the Master of Science in International Business with focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Students will study in their first year in Tübingen and in their second year at one or two universities in Africa. The first exchange semester will take place at the University in Cape Town Business School, the most presigious business school in Africa. Our students will be placed in their MBA program. Additional partnerships on the continent for the second semester are supposed to be finalized soon.

Courses
During their first year in Tübingen, students will achieve 27 ECTS in compulsory studies and 33 ECTS in specialization studies. In their second year abroad, they are required to write their Master thesis (18 ECTS) and to achieve 42 ECTS in elective studies.

Admission
Admission to the M.Sc. in International Business requires a Bachelor's degree in Business Studies or Economics or a comparative degree with excellent grades. Applicants are expected to have solid intermediate level knowledge in Business Studies, Economics and Statistics. In addition, applicants must be fluent in German and English. Students applying for the M.Sc. in International Business (Africa) should have high interest in the business fields of this emerging economic region which they will have to demonstrate if invited for the interview.

Dr Tenzer and Prof Pudelko won the Best Qualitative Paper Award in IB at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Orlando

Dr Helene Tenzer presented two papers at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (AOM) in Orlando, the worldwide largest academic conference in management studies with close to 8500 participants from 88 countries. One of these papers, co-authored by Prof Pudelko, not only entered the Best Paper Proceedings but also won the newly founded "Gustavson School of Business Award for the Best Qualitative Paper in International Business". A further paper was presented at the conference by Dr Stefan Volk, co-authored by Tine Köhler (University of Melbourne) and Prof Pudelko. A third paper of which Prof Pudelko was co-author was presented by Dr Sebastian Reiche (IESE, Barcelona).

Prof Pudelko won Nomination for the Best Paper Award at the Academy of International Business Annual Meeting in Istanbul

Prof Markus Pudelko presented a paper first at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Japanese Business Studies (AJBS). Subsequently he presented a further paper at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of International Business (AIB), the worldwide largest academic conference in International Business. This paper, co-authored by Prof Anne-Wil Harzing and Dr Sebastian Reiche, was one out of twelve papers nominated for the Best Paper Award of the conference. With more than 1200 submissions, this paper was thus selected to be among the top 1% contributions at this year’s conference. A further paper was presented at the conference by Dr Helene Tenzer and Markus Pudelko.

Prof Markus Pudelko and Dr Helene Tenzer attended the conference „Africa Europe Entrepreneur Dialogue“ in Accra, Ghana. The conference was convened on the initiative of Prof Horst Köhler, former President of the Federal Republic of Germany and member of the UN High Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda. Chaired by Prof Köhler, the conference brought together successful entrepreneurs from both continents to discuss the contribution of the private sector to the development goals outlined in a recent report by the UN High Level Panel.

The student association (“Fachschaft”) of the School of Business and Economics awarded a prize to Prof Helmut Haussmann for his lecture "The Internationalization of Medium-Sized Market Leaders". Students evaluated this lecture as the best course on the B.Sc. level during the academic year 2012-13.

Dr Helene Tenzer earns an Athene scholarship and a Fast Track scholarship of the Robert Bosch Foundation

Dr Helene Tenzer was recently awarded two two-year scholarships. The Athene program for female scholars was designed in the context of Tübingen University's excellence initiative. It provides research funds and professional coaching to 12 junior researchers of all disciplines. The Fast Track program of the Robert Bosch Foundation provides leadership training to 20 female postdocs working in business, economics, social sciences or legal studies.

Prof Pudelko took part at a Deans’ Conference at Kyoto University Graduate Management School together with deans from 11 other leading business schools from 11 countries around the world. All those business schools are partner universities of Kyoto University Graduate Management School. Prof Pudelko had established an exchange partnership with Kyoto University Graduate Management School in October 2012 during his last visit in Kyoto. He used the occasion of this meeting to establish exchange agreements with six other universities in Asia and Europe.

Former President of the Federal Republic of Germany Horst Köhler teaching on Africa

The former Director General of the IMF and former President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Prof Horst Köhler, took part in teaching the course “Doing Business in Africa” offered by the Department of International Business. On the first day of the course Dr Stefan Volk from the DoIB provided an introduction into the subject, followed by a session by Dr Gisela Schneider from the German Institute for Medical Mission who taught about the work of NGOs in Africa. On a subsequent day Siemens Management Consulting provided some insights into their work in Africa. On the third and final day students presented in groups the outcome of their assignment and discussed their findings with Profs Köhler and Pudelko. President Köhler also gave a keynote speech entitled
“Africa is on its way”. The course ended by a lecture by Prof Pudelko on the cultural influence on African management.

Prof Pudelko co-organised from 18 to 20 October for the ninth year in a row the EIASM Workshop in International Strategy and Cross-Cultural Management together with Chris Carr (University of Edinburgh), Sebastian Reiche (IESE) and the local host Vlad Vaiman (Reykjavik University). Best papers from this workshop and the previous one in Moscow will be published in a special issue of International Journal of Human Resource Management. Helene Tenzer from the DoIB attended the workshop as well.

Prof Markus Pudelko collected for two months data for his research in Kyoto

Prof Pudelko spent from August to October two months as a visiting researcher at Doshisha University in Kyoto. During this time he advanced his research project on Japanese career women working for foreign subsidiaries. He also visited Tokyo University, Hitotsubashi University (Tokyo), Waseda University (Tokyo), JAIST (Kanazawa) and Kyoto University for presentations at research seminars and the advancement of student exchanges.

After presenting three competitive papers at the Academy of International Business Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. in June, Prof Pudelko also presented two papers at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Boston which took place from 3-7 August. Both papers, one with Aida Hajro (Brunel University, London) and one with Helene Tenzer (at Prof Pudelko’s department) were included in the Best Papers Proceedings. Only the best 4% of the submissions were selected for this publication. In addition, the paper with Aida Hajro was awarded with the Robert H. Schaffer Award for the Best Paper in Applied International Management and the Solkovo Best Paper Finalist Award.

Dr Tenzer co-organised a Professional Development Workshop (PDW) on “Language in International Business Research” together with Sachiko Yamao (Melbourne University) and Wilhelm Barner-Rasmussen (Hanken University, Helsinki) at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Boston which took place from 3-7 August. In addition, Dr Tenzer presented two papers, both co-authored by Prof. Pudelko. One of these papers was among the four percent of submissions that were included in the Best Papers Proceedings. In addition, Dr Tenzer co-founded with Sachiko Yamao and Wilhelm Barner-Rasmussen a listserv for scholars interested in the impact of language on International Business. Dr Tenzer develops and coordinates international management electives for non-business students

Prof Hans Küng, professor of theology at
the Tübingen University from 1960 to 1996 and since then emeritus professor, gave a guest lecture on 06.07. 2011 in the course “Managing Across Cultures” on Global Business Ethic. Prof Küng is a Swiss Catholic priest, controversial theologian, and prolific author. Since 1995 he has been President of the Foundation for a Global Ethic (Stiftung Weltethos). Given Prof Küng’s fame, the lecture was opened to all students and members of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and some 100 interested persons attended his talk.

Master Course "International Business Venture": Presentations at Erbe Elektromedizin GmbH

The students of the Master Course “International Business Venture”, taught by Jörg Büechl, presented on 05 July at ERBE Elektromedizin GmbH the results of their group projects on which they had been working for the entire semester. The presentation was attended by the managing director, the head of the marketing and the IT department, some 20 other ERBE employees, Jörg Büechl and Prof Pudelko. The students also handed over extensive reports they wrote to assist the company in the standardization of their national and international organizational communication structure.

Prof Pudelko was in Japan from 11 June to 02 July, presenting several papers at two conferences in Nagoya: the annual meetings of the Association of Japanese Business Studies and the Academy of International Business. The DoIB welcomes Dr Tara Patzelt as a new member of the team. Dr Patzelt studied Business Administration at the Universities of Würzburg and Augsburg and did subsequently a Master of Business Research and a PhD at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.

The 8th EIASM Workshop in International Strategy and Cross Cultural Management in Tübingen

Prof Pudelko has been co-organizing this annual workshop for the last seven years. Previous workshops took place 2002 in Växjö (Sweden), 2004 in Edinburgh (UK), 2005 in Vienna (Austria), 2006 in Toulouse (France), 2007 in Istanbul (Turkey), 2008 in Barcelona (Spain) and 2009 in Helsinki (Finland). This year’s workshop took place in Tübingen from 08.-09. October 2010. Location of the workshop was Schloss Hohentübingen. In order to be eligible for participation, full papers had to be submitted and pass a review process (rejection rate 40%). Participants came from 14 countries. Tübingen University was represented with contributions by Prof Pudelko, Dr Helene Haas and Dr Stefan Volk, all from the International Business department. In 2011 best papers from this workshop will be published in a special edition of Schmalenbach Business Review.

The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung organized in Passau a symposium about conflicts and synergy effects between China and the European Union. In his opening address, Jörg Büechl analyzed the compatibility of EU and China policies and outlined several potential scenarios for the future, involving the EU-Chinese partnership from a political and economic perspective. His talk was followed by an extensive panel discussion.

The DoIB is proud to welcome Professor Haussmann as a new member of their team. Prof Haussmann, a native of Tübingen, has been a member of the Bundestag (the German parliament) for 26 years, secretary general of the F.D.P (Germany’s liberal democratic party) and Minister of Economics during the reunification phase, one of Germany’s most crucial periods, both politically and economically. He will read in the summer semester a course on the internationalization strategies of Germany’s so called “hidden champions” (world leading small and medium sized enterprises).

While InOne Consult previoulsly had two formal links with academics from Tübingen University, this number doubled now with Prof Pudelko and Jörg Büechl joining forces.

Jörg Büechl held a presentation at a seminar in Bonn on 10 November hosted by the German Association of Personnel Management (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Personalführung) on success factors in cross-cultural communication with Chinese. Attendants were managers collaborating with Chinese from, among others, Philips, Zentis, BSH, Henkel, Bombardier, Citibank, Toshiba, Dr. Oetker, Nestle, Pirelli and Voith. During his presentation, Jörg Büechl put a special emphasis on trust- and relationship building processes in China as well as on employee retention. His presentation was followed by an extensive panel discussion.

Some 75 invited guests and 200 students attended. Prof Pudelko presented a comprehensive overview of current challenges in the field of International Business, discussing in particular the context between management research and national culture. The following three key questions were addressed: 1. are national cultures actually relevant for management research? 2. how can the influence of national culture on management be researched? 3. in what way does globalization change our understanding of national culture? In order to respond better to challenges multinational companies are facing in the age of globalization, Prof Pudelko called for a paradigm shift in the field of International Business research.

The awarding ceremony took place in London on 25 September. Due to his commitment to organize a workshop in Helsinki (see news item no. 4), Prof Pudelko was unfortunately unable to attend.

Prof Markus Pudelko was invited to give a talk at the “International Conference: Innovation and Technology in Korea in International Perspective” held in Vienna on 25 September 2009

Given to his commitment to organize a conference in Helsinki (see previous news item), his talk, entitled “Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Korean Economy: Lessons from a Cross-Cultural Perspective”, was presented by Mr. Jörg Büechl, research assistant at the Department of International Business. The talk was based on a speech given by Prof Pudelko in Seoul on 03 November 2008 to some 600 managers, ministerial representatives and scholars.

As in previous years selected papers will be published in a special issue of an esteemed journal. Previous workshops took place at prestigious universities in Edinburgh, Wien, Toulouse, Istanbul and Barcelona. The 2010 conference, to which about 50 management scholars from Europe but also beyond are expected, will be organized by Prof Pudelko at Tübingen University.

The AOM Meeting is the world’s largest conference for management scholars, this year with over 5700 paper submissions and 8000 participants from some 80 countries. Prof Pudelko’s paper “Multinational Teams in the Context of Organizational Culture: A Multi-Company Case Study”, co-authored by Aida Hajro from Brunel University, was awarded to be among the four best papers in the International Management Division, one of the largest divisions of the Academy. Furthermore, it was awarded to be one of the five best papers in Organizational Behaviour / Human Resource Management / Organizational Theory of the same division.

The following day Prof Pudelko and his team (Dr. Stefan Volk, Dr. Helene Haas and Mr. Jörg Büechl) formally commenced their work. They have been joined in October by Dr. Margitte Müller, by the secretary Ms. Gaby Grüßhaber and the student assistants Ms. Maren Uffenkamp and Ms. Tamara Wehrstein.
