The “audit familiengerechte hochschule" – family-friendly university audit – run by berufundfamilie Service GmbH is a strategic tool to assist management with arranging the conditions for working and studying at universities in a family-friendly way. Higher education has a unique need to improve the balance of life and work. The challenge here is to create family-friendly working conditions for university staff and academics. Among other things, this includes flexible working, such as flexitime and working from home, creation of family work rooms for use when children have to be brought to the university because child care or school is not available, and support for staff who care for dependents. Student parents must be guaranteed family-friendly and flexible study conditions that can compensate for the demands on their time. The aim is to establish a sustainable, family-friendly higher education policy and support it in practice in the university’s culture.
2014 Audit
Following an extensive audit in 2013, the University of Tübingen was awarded the certificate for the first time on March 15, 2014. It was presented to vice president Prof. Karin Amos on June 17, 2014, at a ceremony in Berlin.
2017 Re-audit
In autumn 2016 the University of Tübingen was successfully re-audited and on March 15, 2017, was awarded the certificate for the next three years. Targets seen as a declaration of intent for the next three years had been agreed with every hierarchical level at the university. These set out objectives and measures and the target groups to which each of them applied.
2020 Re-audit and Consolidation
On March 15, 2020, the University of Tübingen received the family-friendly university certificate for the third time in a row. The national presentation ceremony for the audit and the certificate took place as an online event for the first time on June 15, 2020.
2023 Dialogs
At the start of 2023, the berufundfamilie Service GmbH’s auditor held dialogs with various groups of university members. The action program this gave rise to will apply for the next three years and has been approved by the President’s Office. On June 13, 2023, the University of Tübingen was awarded the family-friendly university certificate for the fourth time.
Annual reports document progress and milestones. The University of Tübingen is currently in the implementation stage. We call on all members of the university equally to assist in realizing these measures and achieving the objectives, and are confident of support.
