Critical Thinking and Beyond: Normative Questions in Teacher Education Today

Problem Statement/Objective of the Special Interest Group (SIG)

The continuation of liberal and progressive societal forms and their recognition can no longer be taken for granted. This is one of the reasons why discussions about the plurality, validity, justification and acceptance of values and norms are necessary. We want to bring to the fore evaluative, normative and ultimately ethical issues in teacher education that are often neglected in academic discourse. In this way, the SIG aims to explore the question of how philosophical-ethical reflection can be developed and justified in the context of plural values and norms and their recognition. The group will facilitate debates with different actors in teacher education, make hidden issues and conflicts transparent, and engage in constructive exchange with colleagues in teacher education, including at an international level. We are planning an international conference in Tübingen with the title "Critical Thinking in Higher Education Curricula" (February 2021).
