On January 31, 2019, 6.15 p.m., Dr. Tsai Hui-ju Michelle 蔡蕙如, Visiting Fellow at the Mercator Institute of China Studies, Berlin, will give a public lecture at the ERCCT:
An anthropology of Taishang: cross-Strait business, politics and identity
Taiwanese businessmen’s investment into China and technology transfer have played a key role in boosting the Chinese economy since China’s economic reform, though interflows as such also witnessed Taiwan’s increasing economic dependency on mainland China amid unresolved political fractions. This lecture introduces how an anthropological approach can provide alternative perspectives on the issue aside from the economic data.
Dr. Michelle Tsai is Visiting Fellow at the Mercator Institute for China Studies and Supervisor in Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on globalization, the political economy of Chinese capitalism, media culture and cross-strait relations.
