TPACK 4.0 – interdisciplinary, practice-oriented and research-based support for media teaching skills for teachers

Brief Description

Project TPACK 4.0 represents an integrated, cross-locational media education established by teachers in the first phase of teacher education in order to prepare fellow teachers to effectively implement digital media in classrooms. The starting point of the project is the support of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), which has up until now been underemphasized in teacher education. TPACK includes knowledge of the didactic functions and versatility of digital media in order to accomplish content-specific teaching goals and develop the skills necessary to create an effective digital classroom.

The Weingarten College of Education (PH Weingarten) and the Tübingen School of Education are currently developing an interdisciplinary module of media education, which will be implemented in the central subjects of pedagogical content knowledge at both universities. Thanks to an intelligent interweaving of theory and practice in their media training, prospective teachers will be adequately prepared to utilize digital media in the classroom. This system makes use of the Inverted Classroom Method, in which the common learning activities (knowledge transfer, hands-on experience) within and outside of the classroom are reversed. In many theories of media education, knowledge transfer takes places flexibly, independent of learning environment, and is regulated by the student in individual, computer-supported phases of self-study. The step-by-step convergence with media-based classroom practice occurs via guided periods of practical experience in teaching-learning labs. Teacher candidates have the opportunity to earn an additional media-education certificate upon successful completion of the module.
