Tübingen School of Education (TüSE)

Lehr:werkstatt (Longterm School Internship)

Short Description

Lehr:werkstatt (Teaching Workshop) is a optional longterm school internship, which replaces the introductory internship within the Bachelor of Education (Gymnasium).

The approach has been developed by the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt: A teacher(the Lehr:mentor) and a teacher candidate (the Lehr:werker) build a tandem and work together for one school year.

The student takes part in the teaching in blocks (2-3 weeks) as well as regularly one day a week (approx. 5 hours).

The one-year internship includes several training workshops and a ongoing academic class.

The close relationship between student and teacher is a special characteristic of the Teaching Workshop. Students collect intensive practical experiences and teachers gain new ideas and can teach in a team.

Research Design

The close relationship between Mentor and Mentee is a special characteristic of the Teaching Workshop. Research on school internships stresses the importance of mentoring and support for professionalization processes. Well-balanced support and challenge is an important indicator of successsul learning during school internships. Interrelations between quality of the relationship, given support and provided challenges are approached with inter-disciplinary, qualitative methods. Several preparatory and follow-up discussions of lesson preparation and teaching are taped, transcribed und linguistically (analytically) assessed.

Untersuchungsgegenstand sind u.a. Sprecherwechsel, Eröffnung und Beendigung von Gesprächen, Imagekonstruktion, grammatische Strukturen und lexikalische Einheiten.
