Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology

Safe Experimenting in the Chemistry Lab

Course Goal

In this course children conduct experiments independently, learn safe experimental practices and scientific methods, and discover their joy of chemistry playfully.

Course content

This course promotes both scientific understanding and interest in chemistry. It focuses on practical student experiments using a specially developed experiment kit that enables safe, problem- and process-oriented work.

Children take on the role of chemists, form their own hypotheses, and systematically test them through experiments. This inquiry-based approach helps them acquire basic chemical knowledge while strengthening key scientific competencies—especially in knowledge acquisition.

The course provides a solid, age-appropriate engagement with chemical phenomena beyond mere observation and lays the foundation for scientific thinking and working methods.

Target group

This course is aimed at particularly gifted and highly gifted third- and fourth-grade students of the Hector Children’s Academies program.

Why was this course particularly important to you?

The goal in developing the course was to spark children’s enthusiasm for chemistry at an early stage in an exciting and hands-on way. And that is exactly what we achieved with this course!
