Degree programs

The Institute of Sociology offers the following degree programs:

  •  Bachelor of Sociology
  •  Master of Sociology with a Focus on Empirical Research
  •  Master of Sociology: Diversity and Society
  •  Master of Public Policy and Social Change

All degree programs start in the winter semester.

Bachelor's degree in sociology
Sociology can be studied as a BA major or minor subject. Each winter semester, up to 88 students can begin their studies in the BA main subject. The BA minor subject is admission-free. The standard period of study is 6 semesters.

Master's degrees in sociology

  •  In the MA program Sociology with a Focus on Empirical Research, up to 20 students can begin their studies in the winter semester; the standard period of study is four semesters.
  •  In the MA program Sociology: Diversity and Society, up to 15 students can begin their studies in the winter semester; the standard period of study is four semesters.
  •  In the MA program Public Policy and Social Change, up to 20 students can begin their studies in the winter semester; the standard period of study is four semesters.

MA in Sociology with a Focus on Empirical Research

The consecutive Master's program in Sociology with a Focus on Empirical Research offers four semesters of further qualification in sociology with special emphasis on quantitative and qualitative methods of empirical research. The content-related specialisation is oriented towards three subject areas:

  •  Gender – Bodies– Knowledge
  •  Social Inequality and Institutions
  •  Migration, Education and Life Course

MA Sociology: Diversity and Society

The consecutive Master's program Sociology: Diversity and Society offers the opportunity to deepen knowledge about the connection between diversity and society as well as to further develop research competence in the field of qualitative empirical research and to sharpen sociological reflection skills.

Student research project on the subject of diversity extending over three semesters to train practical research competence

MA Public Policy and Social Change (english)

The programme provides students with knowledge of the relevant sociological and political science theories and skills in quantitative and qualitative methods enabling them to analyse and critically assess policies and social change and communicate them to decision-makers.
