Ansgar Thiel is Director of the Institute of Sports Science at the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen and holds a Professorial Chair for Sport Sociology. Ansgar Thiel studied sports science, psychology, and psychogerontology. He completed his PhD and habilitation in sport sociology. Ansgar was awarded the Dissertation Award of the Westfälisch-Lippische Universitätsgesellschaft in 1997 and the Habilitation Award of the Westfälisch-Lippische Universitätsgesellschaft in 2001.

From 2008 to 2010, he was Dean of the Faculty for Social and Behavioural Sciences at the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen. Since October 2017, he is Speaker of the Department for Social Sciences.

Prior to joining Eberhard Karls University Tübingen in 2004, Ansgar was a Professor for Sports Sociology at the Technical University of Chemnitz. He was also offered professorships from the University of Paderborn, the University of Berne/CH, and the German Sport University Cologne. In 2012, he was a visiting scholar at the University of Hawaii, USA, and in 2016 at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia.

Ansgar has published more than 200 articles in peer reviewed journals, volumes, and handbooks. Some of his key papers are published in the journals Sociology of Sport Journal, PLos ONE, BMC Public, Psychology of Sport and Exercise, and Computers in Human Behavior. He published 20 books (monographs) in the field of sociology, for example “Sportsoziologie [Sports Sociology] (2013; with K. Seiberth and J. Mayer); Soziologie des Sports [Sociology of Sport] (2000; with K. Cachay, and Soziale Konflikte [Social Conflicts] (2003). Ansgar also edited several volumes in the areas of sociology, health, and education.

Since 2014, Ansgar is the Editor-in-chief of the European Journal for Sport and Society (Routledge).

Research Areas

Sociology of sport, health, and the body, sociology of competitive sport.

His current research focuses on:

  • activity- and health-related biographies,
  • social determinants and biopsychosocial effects of physical activity,
  • body-related stigmatization and health, and
  • social aspects of health in elite sports.

In foregoing research projects, he studied aging concepts and lifestyle of the elderly, integration of migrants in sport settings, organizational change in sports, and social conflicts.

Teaching responsibilities

Ansgar Thiel has taught a variety of courses and lectures in different areas of sport sociology, public health, sport psychology, team and conflict management. He also taught courses and lectures in quantitative and qualitative research methods. Since 2004, Ansgar Thiel has supervised more than 200 master, diploma, and bachelor theses, 14 PhD theses as first supervisor and 17 PhD theses as co-supervisor, and 3 habilitations.

Research grants

Ansgar’s research has received funding from the Federal Institute of Sport Science (Bisp), the Science Campus Tübingen, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Volkswagen Foundation, the Landesgraduiertenförderung Baden-Württemberg, the German Athletics Association among others (Total funding since 2010: > 1.300.000 €)
