Numeracy development in Africa: New evidence from a long-term perspective (1730–1970)

How can we trace how mathematical skills developed on the African continent over the long term? Dr Gabriele Cappelli and Professor Dr Jörg Baten from the Department of Economic History at the University of Tübingen published a study in February 2021 with new findings on the economic development of Africa. The basis of their analysis is the evaluation of data material on people's ability to calculate in several African countries from the beginning of the 18th century to the late 20th century.
