Content

The course offers an introduction into basic institutional characteristics of the Chinese economy and their consequences for economic processes and performance. Both macroeconomic and microeconomic aspects are included, such as growth and development, government and finance, or entrepreneurship and corporate behaviour. One special focus is culture as a context of institutional change and the institution-performance link. The course combines a series of lectures (first part) that give an overview about history and current conditions across policy domains, sectors and regions. with group assignments and presentations on specific topics (second part).

Objectives

Students acquire the knowledge necessary to interpret current policies and business trends in designing long-term strategies in economic and business relations with China. They understand to contextualize events and actions against the background of Chinese history, culture and developmental challenges of sustainable growth.
