Diagrams and graphics as central components of business and biology teaching play a crucial role in the everyday world of pupils. The understanding of such data visualizations is a competence that can be classified in the field of "statistical literacy" or more general, representation competence. This interdisciplinary research project is intended to systematically analyze learners’ basic diagram reading competence in the subjects of economics and biology. Subsequently, a media-supported intervention will be developed, which promotes the diagram reading competence.
Firstly, the statistical representation competence of pupils in grades 8 and 10 is investigated by means of a questionnaire. Subsequently, a group of teacher training students are qualitatively investigated at TüDiLab (Tübingen Digital Teaching Lab) how they deal with statistical representations on the tablet. On the basis of this preliminary work, an intervention will be developed whose effectiveness is examined in selected schools in a pre-post-follow-up control group intervention design.
As one result, an intervention will be available for teachers that can be used both in economics and in biology lessons. We will also contribute to the question how digital media can contribute to the development of the representation competence.
