Chinese Studies

Research at the Chair of Greater China Studies

Research at the Chair of Greater China studies focuses on contemporary politics and society in the PRC, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and also East Asia in comparative perspective. Current research foci are the policy process and local policy implementation in the PRC, private sector reform and state-business relations in the PRC, China’s Taiwan policy and cross-strait relations, East Asian immigration policy and the changing regional order in East Asia under the influence of China’s rise and its transformation into a modern empire. A particular feature of the research at the Chair of Greater China Studies is its strictly empirical approach: all projects are based on intensive fieldwork. This requires a high level of Chinese language proficiency and area expertise which all members of the Chair have acquired.
