The Department of Japanese Studies at the Tübingen Institute for Asian and Oriental Studies is one of the largest institutions for the study of Japan in German-speaking countries. The four full-time chaired professors represent the areas of Japanese cultural studies, linguistics, religious studies, and modern Japan.

Founded in 1993, the Tübingen Center for Japanese Studies at Doshisha University in Kyoto is the only program in Japan for German-language Japanese Studies. Students are required to spend one year of their bachelor studies abroad to ensure that all graduates of Tübingen Japanese Studies are equipped with well-rounded language skills.

More than fifteen instructors guarantee that all students are provided with intensive and individualized advising from the first semester until completion of the bachelor or master’s programs.
