The Department of Korean Studies at Tuebingen University focuses on the historical research of Korea. Research prioritizes the following topics:
- Modern Korea
- The Colonial Period
- The Cold War
Research methods of cultural studies, as well as global historical issues apply to topics concerning Korea. Especially the Colonial Period and the Cold War era offer interesting global-historical characteristics and make evident how complex the dimensions of the modernity might be.
As far as current research topics are concerned, the Department engages in research about the division of Korea, which still plays a great role in East Asia's security policy.
Furthermore, special historical issues, such as the rapid economic growth, South Korea's democratization and the ruling system in North Korea are part of the research agenda.
