Aim of the study

My bachelor thesis aims to investigate the longtime effect of the upgrade of a large wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) with an additional treatment step to reduce the release of micropollutants into the water cycle. My focus lies on the WWTP Langwiese which is connected to the river Schussen, a tributary to Lake Constance, and was upgraded with powdered activated carbon in 2013. Previous studies have already shown that the additional purification step was very efficient in improving the health of invertebrates. By sampling gammarids up- and downstream of the WWTP and analyzing the sex ratio as well as the fecundity of breeding females, the effect of the effluent on the health of gammarids can be investigated.
