Department of Geoscience

MSc Geoökologie / Geoecology

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Geoökologie/Geoecology is an interdisciplinary program with a key focus on research. It builds on the wide range of knowledge in geosciences, biology, ecology, chemistry, physics and mathematics obtained in an undergraduate science degree. The program involves a quantitative understanding of the complex interactions between lithosphere, pedosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere as well as relevant methodological skills for successfully addressing environmental science issues.

Course Profile

Students gain a deeper understanding of natural and anthropogenic influenced environmental systems and can use this understanding to describe and quantify material and energy flows. Geoecologists can use their broad scientific education to identify and develop sustainable solutions to environmental problems caused by human use of Earth's ecosystems. They employ scientific and mathematical methods, taking into account planning and economic aspects.

Scientific Profile of the Program

Strong research professorships ensure a wide range of interesting topics for a Master's thesis, often in collaboration with international partners. Students have to choose one of the three fields of specialization:

  • Biogeoscience of the Land Surface
  • Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology
  • Ecology and Nature Conservation
Career Prospects

Due to a research-based education with a diverse specialized knowledge in the environmental field, our graduates have good chances in different areas such as:

  • Advice to public decision makers, private sector companies and individuals
  • Employment in the public service in ministries and agencies at the federal, state or municipal level
  • Environmental research or environmental analysis at universities, research institutes or for industry
Doctorate Opportunities

The broad and renowned environmental research at the University of Tübingen offers a variety of doctorate opportunities. The good relations with universities in Germany and abroad facilitate access to doctoral studies at other institutions.
