Alpine Molasse

Small Mammal Biostratigraphy and Geochronology in the Upper Freshwater Molasse of Southern Germany

The main goal of this research project is the establishment of a highly resolved Geochronology of the North Alpine Foreland Basin in Southern Germany by the combination of biostratigraphic and magnetostratigraphic methods for the period ~18 - ~10 million years ago. The results of this interdisciplinary project should clarify the existing temporal discrepancies between the geochronological scales for continental sediments of Western Europe and Central Europe and facilitate a highly resolved correlation (≤ 100 kyr) between the continental series of Central and Western Europe as well as with a global Geochronology (Global Polarity Timescale).
