A ThermoScientific Neptune Plus MC-ICP-MS was installed at the isotope geochemistry laboratory in Tuebingen in June 2012. This instrument is mainly used for non-traditional stable isotope ratio measurements of Li, Si, Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se and Mo, as well as for radiogenic isotope ratio determinations of Hf and Pb (both, in situ and from solutions). The optional Aridus II desolvation sample uptake system allows accurate isotope ratio determinations of very low analyte concentrations.

Solution ICP-MS

Solution analyses are carried out using an iCAP Qc ICP-MS ( that was installed in June 2012. This quadrupole ICP-MS instrument is used for trace element concentration analysis on bulk sample solutions.

  • The iCAP Qc quadrupole ICP-MS is just below the capacity limit by internal analyses requirements. Therefore collaborational research and commercial analyses can only be carried out in exceptional cases.


The Finnigan MAT262 was installed in 1991 and is mainly used for standard Sr and Nd isotope (IC and ID) measurements. It allows simultaneous detection of up to 8 ion beams with 7 movable and 1 fixed central Faraday detectors. For low signal detection one SEM (secondary electron multiplier) is installed. In 2011 the Finnigan MAT 262 was up-graded with Spectromat’s ( RunIt software, QHV 2 ion source supply, Power Control Unit PCU and filament current supply unit. Fully automated Sr and Nd isotope measurement is possible.

Gas IR Mass Spectrometry

Light stable isotopes (HNCOS) are measured by conventional Gas-IRMS, provided by a Finnigan MAT252 that was installed in 1991. It is able to measure in CF-mode and connected to a Gasbench II device for isotope analyses of C-O on carbonates C in DIC, and O in water samples. The 252 is further equipped with a dual inlet system that allows for the measurement of offline prepared gas samples. Furthermore, a Delta Plus XL was installed in 1999 and works with a CF-EA for CNS bulk isotope analyses and a CF-TC-EA for O in phosphates. A new state of the art CRDS technique exists since 2016 using a Picarro 2130i that delivers stable H (2/1) and O (18/16) isotope ratios in water samples.

The Bruker AXS S4 Pioneer is a wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and was purchased in 2003. 10 major elements and up to 25 trace elements are measured on fused beads and powder beads of geological materials using a calibration with 35 international rock standards. An additional “standardless” analysis software package also allows for the determination of the chemical composition of completely unknown materials.
