1. Programme
My interest focuses on the description on Neandertal sociocultural behaviours. With a new interpretive framework and geographic approach, cultural dynamics during the Late Middle Palaeolithic in the Paris Basin can now be understood. My research is now oriented to the East of France, especially the Rhine axis (Alsace, Lorraine, Germany and Switzerland). Several indicators of Franco-German exchanges and/or contacts have been proposed by French researchers for these periods, the latter frequently mentioning Germanic "influences" to explain some industries in Burgundy or the North of France ("Micoquian"). However, it should be noted that such evidence of exchanges are not accepted by the entire scientific community. To better understand the relationships that may have existed between Neandertals on both sides of the Rhine, my work examines the East of France, particularly Alsace. This research is crucial given the scarcity of documentation concerning this period. Such archaeological paucity is mainly due to the lack of investment of prehistorians in these regions.
To meet these objectives, I have reopened the excavation at the Middle Palaeolithic site of Mutzig (Alsace, France), in collaboration with IPNA (Basel, Switzerland) and the Universities of Strasbourg and Lille. In conjunction, I am carrying out campaigns of survey and test excavations in southern Alsace, which has enabled the discovery of several Magdalenian and Azilian occupations that we are in the process of testing with Sylvain Griselin (Inrap and UMR 7041). Finally, I am launching a study program of loess profiles in Alsace (in particular the Achenheim profile) with the collaboration of the Universities of Cologne and Aachen (Germany) and Strasbourg.
Focus on current excavations
1. Programmed excavations at the Middle Palaeolithic site of Mutzig-Rain (Alsace, France)
The Palaeolithic is very poorly known along the Upper Rhine, although it is relatively well documented in other French, German and Swiss regions. The discovery of several Neandertal camps (ca. 90,000 years ago) at Mutzig Rain offers a fresh look at the first prehistoric populations in the region. Indeed, following the chance discovery in 1994, followed by rescue excavations by Jean Sainty in 1994, nine sites attributed to the Middle Palaeolithic were discovered at the base of a cliff overlooking the Bruche Valley at Mutzig (Alsace, France). Since 2009, systematic excavations have been carried out by the Pôle d’Archéologie Interdépartemental Rhénan (PAIR), the Universities of Strasbourg, Basel, Cologne, and Lille and the Museum of Natural History of Paris (excavations by Jean Detrey from 2009 to 2011, Thomas Hauck in 2012 and by our team in 2013). These field seasons confirm the incredible preservation of the archaeological record, placing the value of the site at a European level since abundant lithic and faunal assemblages, and perhaps spatial organization, have been detected.
2. Programmed excavations at the Upper Palaeolithic site of Wolschwiller (Alsace, France)
Since 2011, the Alsatian Jura (southern Alsace, Upper Rhine) has been the focus of thematic survey oriented to the discovery of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites (Angevin, 2011), in order to document the – too – rare evidence for these periods in Alsace. One cave, in large part filled, found by a Strasbourg and Basel team in 2006 in the commune of Wolschwiller due to the uplift of lithic artefacts in badger dens, was tested in July 2012 (Koehler et al., 2012). In addition to the richness of the archaeological record (lithics, fauna, microfauna, combustion areas), this test excavation revealed three occupation levels dating to the end of the Upper Palaeolithic:
- Azilian (C14 date on charcoal: 11,279 ± 77 BP),
- Upper Magdalenian/Azilian transition (C14 date on reindeer antler: 11,782 ± 81 BP)
- Upper Magdalenian (C14 date on burnt bone: 12,452 ± 86 BP).
A complementary test pit and additional surveys in the area are planned for 2013, directed by Sylvain Griselin (Inrap and UMR 7041).
