My field work focuses on the Levant (Israel, Syria), the Caucasus (Armenia) and South Africa (West Coast region). My research emphasizes the analysis of diachronic settlement patterns, landscape archaeology, Pleistocene lifeways, modes of subsistence, environmental reconstruction, coastal adaptations and personal ornaments. My work examines changes in culture related to new technological and subsistence behaviors at the time of transition from the Middle to Later Stone Age in South Africa and the Middle to Upper Paleolithic in the Levant and the Caucasus. My other current projects look at the development of ocher use across Africa during the Middle Stone Age and the manufacture of ostrich eggshell beads at Mumba Rockshelter in Tanzania.
