The Archaeometry Research Group of the Institute for Pre- and Protohistory and Medieval Archaeology of the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen seeks to fill a

3-year PhD position – Archaeometry of ancient lime mortars
m/f/d, remuneration according to the German salary scale 13 TV-L (65%).

The Archaeometry Research Group is an interdisciplinary and supra-faculty unit investigating archaeologically and scientifically inorganic and organic traces of the Human past.

The position is part of the DFG-funded project "Technological Transfer in the Central Mediterranean: Ancient Lime Mortars and Plasters from Carthage, Pantelleria, and Solunto" (2025-2027). The project goal is to shed new light on the role of the Phoenicians/Punics in the spread of mortar technologies across the central Mediterranean.

Your role:

The PhD project will involve a detailed archaeometric examination and analysis of mortar assemblages from key sites in the central Mediterranean, utilizing petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical techniques. The role of the candidate is designed to further develop research skills and support a doctoral thesis at the intersection of Archaeology and Archaeometry. During the period of funding, the Ph.D. candidate is also expected to participate in organizational tasks of the project and in field campaigns.

Your profile:

  • A university degree ideally in Archaeometry, Archaeological Materials Science or a related field (MSc or equivalent)
  • Passion for interdisciplinary research questions and methodologies
  • Experience in instrumental archaeometric methods, preferably including ceramic petrography using optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills (basic knowledge of German, Italian, and/or French is advantageous)
