Study content Master Geosciences

The Master's programme in Geosciences requires participation in 15 modules and the preparation of a Master's thesis. Students choose a specialisation (biogeology, exploration, geodynamics or mineralogy) in which they are obliged to occupy three core modules. A further nine modules can be chosen freely (both in further depth of the selected subject area and in combination with other subject areas).
The program also includes three general compulsory modules (Scientific Work I+II, Scientific Presentation) as well as participation in off-road days with a total of six credit points. Upon application, further compulsory elective modules from the natural sciences (also max. two modules from the Bachelor's programme in Geosciences) can be admitted.

Scientific practice 1

As early as the second semester the students are integrated into the current research work of a work group. The module concludes with a report on a current research topic.

Scientific practice 2

Working in a research group will be continued in the third semester. The aim of this module is to elaborate the topic for the Master's thesis and to create the work programme for it together with the supervisor of the thesis.

Master Thesis and Scientific Presentation

The master thesis is supplemented by the module "Scientific Presentation". It consists of three parts: A presentation in the master seminar, a lecture in the work group and the creation of a poster with the results of the master thesis.

Subject areas
Subject area Biogeology

The focus of the specialisation Biogeology (Palaeontology) is on marine and continental biological processes from past and present. The emphasis is on the understanding of fossil organism groups (from plants to vertebrates) as proxies of changing ecosystems, as well as on evolutionary processes, climate dynamics, facies analysis and biomimetics, all of which are closely linked to biology. In an object and terrain oriented education we impart practical knowledge in palaeontological laboratory and excavation techniques.


Subject area Exploration

The aim is to provide practical training in the field of exploration for sedimentary georesources with a focus on oil/natural gas deposits. While the participating lecturers at the University of Tübingen teach the general basics, various guest lecturers from industry offer practical applications with examples from original data sets in several compact courses.


Subjetct area Geodynamics

Geodynamics deals with the quantification of the interactions between climate, tectonics and processes on the earth's surface. Topics to be dealt with include:


  • Deformation and structure of the earth
  • Modelling of rock formation and erosion
  • Techniques of geological age determination
  • Climate and Paleoclimate
  • Field works
  • Computer modeling from rock mechanics to global tectonics

This research is very interdisciplinary and focuses on the integration of depth, surface and atmospheric processes.

Subject area Mineralogy

The specialisation Mineralogy concentrates on mineralogical, geochemical and petrological processes that take place in and on earth. The analysis, modelling and simulation of these processes is an essential part of the study in order to explain the Earth system and predict developments.
Since minerals are the basic building blocks of all rocks and therefore of the earth, modern mineralogical and petrological research and knowledge are the basis for understanding these processes and thus the formation and change of the earth and the planets over time.
