Subatomic Physics

The section Subatomic Physics focuses on the following reasearch areas:

Underground Laboratory

An underground laboratory was constructed in the years 2005-2006 next to the physics building. It is designed to conduct tests of cryogenic detectors with a reduced cosmic ray flux.

Accelerator Laboratory

Until 2018, the section operated a 3MV Van de Graaff accelerator at the Rosenau for research and education purposes. It was regularly used for courses in radiation protection and a nuclear physics lab course was offered for students.

The possibility to create neutrons in a wide energy range between a few keV and 20 MeV made the facility interesting for questions in astro particle physics research, e.g. for testing novel detector concepts. At the moment the facility is being decomissioned.
