Jon Beltz completed his PhD in Assyriology at Yale University, where his dissertation, Namtar: Deity, Demon, Agent of Fate, examined the roles and nature of a Mesopotamian chthonic figure, Namtar, a sort of grim reaper in Mesopotamian mythology. He then spent a year working at the KFG MagEIA at the University of Würzburg. His research focuses on the religion and literature of ancient Mesopotamia, and in particular the nature of deities and demons and exorcistic magical texts. He has worked on Mesopotamian amuletic texts and is currently working on an updated critical edition of a group of incantations called the "zi--pa3 incantations.
