Culture change on a micro-scale - site biography and cultural identity at Uivar (Romania)

Wolfram Schier

In the course of its 800 year history, the Vinča culture has displayed considerable dynamic as to its distribution and cultural dominance. Both its primary spread as well as the shift to its more recent development starting around 5000 calBC (C1 or Gradac phase) have been subject of discussion and culture-historical scenarios. The lecture will focus on this culture change on a household scale. The tell site of Uivar in the Romanian Banat started as a Szakálhát settlement around 5200 calBC and, one century later, started to shift its cultural attribution to the Vinča culture within four generations. Detailed stratigraphic analysis, a generational time resolution and a rather spectacular pottery complex allow to trace this process on a household level.
