Selma Güney's research interests include critical media and communication studies and minority media practices. In her dissertation, she investigates the self-positioning of Muslim women in digital spaces.
Selma Güney received her bachelor's and master's degrees in communication science from the Department of Communication at the University of Münster. She also studied Islamic theology and took coursework in political science, philosophy, and art history. Her studies were supported by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation.
In her master's thesis on "Religious Opinion Leadership among Muslims in a Minority Situation," she focused on the significance of media (persons) for the religious orientation of young Muslims in Germany. Her thesis won the best master's thesis award by MedienAlumni Münster e.V. in Communication for the year 2020. She wrote her bachelor’s thesis on "The formation of public sphere(s) in a political crisis in Europe. The failure of enacting an European Constitution."
Since 2019, Selma Güney is part of the organizing team of the Academic Network for Critical Communication Studies (KriKoWi) where she is involved in various publication projects. As a political activist, she is co-founder of various political groups working on feminist, anti-racism, and transnational topics, including the Muslima Empowerment project. She has given various political and academic lectures, hosted workshops and moderated events. During her studies, she was extensively involved in higher education policy-making.
Since 2016, Selma Güney worked as a research assistant at the Engelberg Center for Innovation Law and Policy at New York University School of Law with Professor Christopher Jon Sprigman and Stephan Tontrup. She gained further practical experience in public relations, local journalism, and youth education.
Since February 2022, Selma Güney is pursuing her PhD as a doctoral researcher in the unit Transformation of Media Cultures. She teaches coursework in media theory and methods and is responsible for the departmental exchange coordination. In her dissertation, she investigates the self-positioning of Muslim women in digital spaces.
