The interprofessional and interdisciplinary master’s degree program in Biomedical Technologies is characterized by practice orientation and internationality.
The master program at the University of Tübingen is an excellent choice for students seeking advanced academic and application-oriented research training in emerging fields of Biomedical Technologies integrating the excellent focus areas of Implantology, Bioimaging and Nanoanalytics/Interfaces. The trainings are offered by experts in basic as well as clinical sciences and provide a comprehensive overview of the area.

Our central goal is to prepare our students for various professional challenges to successfully start a career in future oriented branches of Biomedical Technologies.
In the first year, students can choose two out of three specialization modules (Implantology, Bioimaging, Nanoanalytics/Interfaces) allowing the students to tailor the program to their individual interests. The second year of the master program is flexibly organized to allow students to gain practical experience in research institutes, industry or abroad.
Implantology encompasses the development and production of both vital and avital implants. The aim of this module is to transfer a detailed knowledge about tissue engineering, biomaterials, reactor technology as well as interfaces between tissues and synthetic surfaces, biocompatibility, surface passivation and signal transduction. The scope of topics ranges from basic research to clinical trials, including the design of implants, their use in animal trials and their clinical application.
Bioimaging imparts deeper knowledge regarding preclinial imaging and clinical application, i.e. positron-emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), optical imaging (OI), computer tomography (CT), ultrasound (US) and encloses the development of the future generation PET and mulimodality imaging equipment.
On the basis of special laboratory techniques different methods of measurement are demonstrated. For clinical application students discuss very special issues on Biomedical Technologies which are illustrated in practical sessions.
Nanoanalytics/Interfaces integrate biological and molecular nanophysics, nanotechnology, biomedical measurement technology, scanning probe microscopy, electron microscopy, nanostructures, nanomechanics, label-free detection methods, scientific instrumentation and devices, transducers, electrical sensing of living cells, chip-based sensors, hard- and software development. On the basis of lectures, seminars and practical work experience students get insights into a very innovative field of research in Biomedical Technologies and acquire a fundamental knowledge on organization of matter. They get to know interdiciplinary methods of approach and discussion and develop the capability to analyze and solve problem definitions.
Mandatory courses offer competence-based fundamental knowledge and tools demanded from industry and clinic.
Elective courses allow broadening the knowledge in one of the other specialization fields. Alternatively, for students being more technically interested courses at the University of Stuttgart can be chosen (max. 12 ECTS).
24 places are available per year and will be awarded according to the applicant’s qualifications and experience. The program always starts in the winter semester and the application deadline is 15th of June . To be admitted to the Master’s program, students must have completed their first degree.
A ranking list is created based on the final grades or provisional final grades of the first degree. A bonus can additionally be awarded by the selection committee, especially for publications and academic prizes in scientific fields.

In addition to the completed application form, the minimum graduate admission requirements are:
- a Bachelor’s degree/first degree in Medical Technologies or a recognized equivalent from an accredited institution with 180 ECTS and with a final grade of at least 3,0 in the German grading system; equivalence is tested by the selection committee.
- official evidence of English language proficiency
- an “Allgemeine Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB)” i.e. a general qualification for university entrance. Foreign certificates must be verified by the relevant public authority as comparable;
- a curriculum vitae (CV)
- a letter of motivation (a maximum of 1 A4 page)

Foreign language competence
English language requirements for Master’s Applicants:
Applicants must provide proof of their English skills. Proof of English language skills can be demonstrated on the basis of
- Internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT): a minimum total score of 90 and a minimum score of 22 for each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking)
- IELTS: a minimum total score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6 per section
- Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English Test (Grade A or B)
- Language certificate from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in accordance with the levels of language competence of the Common European Framework of Reference and the UNIcert System: minimum grade of (a) or (b) (approx. equivalent to C2/ UNIcert level IV or C1/ UNIcert III respectively) in each section (Listening Comprehension, Spoken Language, Written Language and Reading Comprehension) and a minimum grade of (a) (approx. C2/ UNIcert level IV) in at least two sections.
Exceptions: Some students applying for Master's courses may be exempt from submitting formal test evidence:
- Applicants whose first language/mother tongue is English
- Applicants who have gained 30 ECTS in lectures/modules taught in English as part of a degree course in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland. The language of instruction of each module must be clearly stated on official documents.
- Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in a closely related subject area taught exclusively in English.
- Applicants with a first degree taught exclusively in English.
- Applicants who have gained 30 ECTS (or equivalent) in lectures/modules taught in English as part of a degree course in Great Britain, Ireland, Malta, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, or English-speaking parts of Canada. The language of instruction must be clearly stated on official documents.
- Applicants with a formal university entrance qualification gained through instruction in English.
- Applicants who have written their Bachelor thesis in English and have held the corresponding colloquium or talk in English.
Other documentation of language of instruction will not be accepted.

Tübingen’s consecutive Master’s program lasts two academic years (4 semesters) and encompasses a total of 120 ECTS credit points. It is run by the Faculty of Medicine in close collaboration with the Faculty of Sciences.
Our curriculum complies with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to ensure compatibility with other international programs.
The Master’s program in Biomedical Technologies lasts two academic years (4 semesters) and leads to a Master of Science (M. Sc.) degree. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates may choose to continue their studies by directly pursuing a doctorate in Biomedical Technologies.
Alternatively, graduates may choose to embark upon a professional career with responsibility:
- Design and development of medical devices for clinical application
- Design, development and production of medical devices and instruments
- Development and production of biological surfaces for implant materials
- Research and development in the field of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine

Upon successful completion of the Master of Science program in Biomedical Technologies, graduates may directly pursue a doctorate of PhD.

The Master’s thesis Research Project (30 ECTS) in the fourth semester forms a major component of the course and entails six months’ full-time practical work at university or in industry on a novel piece of research. This element gives students experience in independently solving an experimental problem within the field of modern Biomedical Technologies and writing an extended report. Students gain experience of laboratory work, knowledge of modern scientific methods, and practice in researching scientific literature.
The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tübingen maintains close cooperation with more than 40 universities all over the world, which offers our students the option to complete practical work experiences or to write their Master’s thesis in research departments abroad. The research placement is planned by the student in cooperation with our international coordinator and the chosen host institution.
