The discourse project SIGEL aims to initiate the urgently needed discourse on the care of vulnerable pregnant people in Germany. For this purpose, key ethical, social, and legal issues at the intersection of society, science, and practice are to be discussed publicly and within the professional community, in particular through the direct participation of affected pregnant people and professionals in midwifery science and practice. Identifying differences and assigning vulnerability is a socially contingent process that carries certain risks and must therefore be critically reflected. This is meant to ensure that neither the discourse on the special needs of women from vulnerable groups nor the practical improvement of their care during childbirth invokes stereotypical behavioral expectations and derogatory ascriptions.
