Philosophy and ethics of machine learning in science

Research Area D

The fact that machine learning algorithms will play a central role in the process of scientific discovery challenges our traditional understanding of the scientific process and raises fundamental questions about concepts of scientific discovery and the role of the scientists.

In addition to advancing machine learning and exploring the transformative role of machine learning in science itself, we will study the impact, changes, and challenges to the scientific methodology by machine learning from the perspective of both the

    and
  2. Ethics of machine learning in science.

In order to support Research Area D, we have set up an  Ethics & Philosophy Lab in the Cluster as well as a senior professorship with the philosopher Wolfgang Spohn.
