Linguistics and grammar education
The core objective of my PhD project is how to connect secondary education and insights from the scientific study of language in a fruitful way. More explicitly, I'm concerned with English grammar lessons in German schools. I'm developing linguistically informed teaching material that (i) focusses on semantic notions that are relevant in grammar lessons, such as tense and aspect, (ii) will be empirically tested in classrooms, (iii) will be ready-to-use for interested teachers.
Is that a good idea though? Isn't linguistics too difficult and also irrelevant for grammar education in schools?
Yes, it is a good idea. To adopt a linguistic approach to language teaching comes with many advantages.
