(Im)pure Texts? – Private Letters and the Debate on Linguistic Purism in the French Classical Age
In pursuing the guiding question of which aesthetic implications are associated with the phenomenon of linguistic purism, this branch of project A3 focuses in particular on the complex relationship between standardization efforts and linguistic practice. The linguistic sources to be examined are private letters written during the Classical Age in France, since these firstly combine autological and heterological elements in a prominent way and secondly have a particularly tense relationship to linguistic standardization.
In the 17th century, on the one hand, writing letters of any kind represents an activity with social implications in which strict adherence to “le bon usage” is considered as a mark of “honnêteté” and thus as essential. On the other hand, works on epistolary theory of this period define a more “neglectful” language approximating oral usage as a key feature of private correspondences. Today, following the distinction between the medium and the conception of linguistic utterances established by Koch/Oesterreicher (1985, 1990), the discourse tradition of the private letter is classified as being “conceptually oral” and consequently as belonging to the “language of immediacy” despite its graphic realization.
Thus, it remains to be seen to what extent systematic deviations from the codified linguistic norm – a norm oriented towards the “language of distance” – can be found in these sources.
In answering this question, the interplay between aspirations towards linguistic purity and other, sometimes opposite, traditions is to be illustrated and the (possibly limited) scope of puristic discourses is to be shown.
