Within LEAD, researchers from six core research fields collaborate:

- Neuroscience and Informatics
- Clinical and Personality Psychology
- Language and Linguistics
- Sociology and Economics
They work together in five overlapping areas, so-called intersections, on an interdisciplinary basis (see diagram).
The following long-standing and internationally renowned experts in Education Sciences and related research fields belong to LEAD as Distinguished International Professors:
Not only do they work in Tübingen for several weeks per year, they also co-mentor and teach doctoral candidates, work with early-stage researchers and group leaders, and collaborate within LEAD research projects. Last but not least, they add to the accessibility of research opportunities around the world.
LEAD stands for outstanding research on education-related topics while maintaining the highest standards at all levels of science. Researchers are supported by the LEADing Research Center, which provides services in the fields of study design and analysis, access to the field and dissemination of results.
