David Bräuning, M.Sc.

My PhD project focuses on mathematical-numerical competencies – an area that is closely related to educational contexts and very important in our society. I am interested in the structure of early mathematical-numerical skills of children before school entry and the development of these skills throughout primary school. Thereby, I aim to investigate typical as well as atypical developments by evaluating the long-term effects of early deficits in specific mathematical-numerical skills on later mathematical and educational achievement. For my research, I am using longitudinal data from large scale assessments that cover a broad range of cognitive and ability measures from kindergarten up to secondary school.

Since this project combines theoretical and practical ideas from cognitive developmental psychology with educational psychology, it fits well into the interdisciplinary profile of LEAD. While the structured program offers me the opportunity to broaden my methodological skills, I appreciate the exchange with peers and other researchers from different fields.
